A close friend of mine last year found the motivation to loose some of her pregnancy weight before her wedding. And my sister in law over the last two years has lost an unimaginable amount of weight on her own weight loss journey. Together they’ve inspired me to get up off my arse & do something for myself.

I’m not wanting to loose a lot of weight, I’m more wanting to look after & nurture my sleep deprived body & mind. And if the weight just so happens to fall off in the process, then well, that’s an added bonus.

Enter the Active Women’s Program, a program run by my local gym in conjunction with the council. The aim is to get women active & feeling better about themselves in the hope that they may continue with the group sessions after the completion of the 12week course. It’s designed we do a different activity every week, last week was cardio & it very nearly killed me.

I’ve never been one for the gym, in fact I’m generally the one found running in the opposite direction. I’m more of a team sport kinda girl, give me a game of basketball any day over a group session at the gym. But at $5 a session, including crèche for lil’miss how could I say no.

There’s a few things that have surprised me over the last three weeks, one of them is that I’m actually not that unfit, & I can manage to run a few km’s without stopping. The other surprise blew me away, we’ve unknowingly formed a team, a group of women who all needed the same thing, motivation & support.

The class is full of people from different walks of life, & different fitness levels. Single mums who can’t afford a normal fitness class let alone the crèche fees, mums who just want to meet others, & mum’s who need that extra motivation to get moving.

It’s one of the days of my week that I really look forward to, it’s my outing, sans children. There’s only nine more sessions to go, & already I’m hoping they put on another program once this one’s finished. I’m the most inspired I’ve ever been to get fit, & improve my mind body & soul.

* And on a side note, did you know I’m participating in the World’s Greatest Shave? Yes that’s right, I’m shaving my head. Click here if you’d like to help the Leukaemia Foundation by sponsoring me, every little bit counts!!

Great post lovely! I’m glad you have found some inspiration and motivation to look after YOU. I’d love it if you linked this post up with my Fitness Friday linky… Details on the blog! :) x

  4. That is a great opportunity and go the council. Ifeel so tired tonight that the thought of a walk is enough to make me weep, far less a run. Hopefully will feel differently tomorrow.

I love reading the posts of the healthy mums, perfect in our imperfections and healthy at any size.

I hope you felt better Seana. I love seeing councils actually doing something rather than just talking about it. The Cairns Regional Council also do an amazing job, they offer numerous of free activities on the esplanade like Zumba, water aerobics & yoga. I think we’re finally starting to go places, being active needs to be a normal part of life.

  5. I must say it’s been reading blogs and seeing various images in Instagram that I’ve been inspired to get fit too. It’s been very slow going and I’m not sure I’ve found the best forum for optimum results yet, but at least it’s started. I wish you well with the journey, Prue. Visiting via FYBF today.

Well done on joining in a women’s program! So awesome that it’s a local community initiative!
And wow in taking part in the World’s Biggest Shave! Go you!

  7. Well done! I hope there is some kind of support for those that cant afford the gym to continue afterwards. I would’ve loved that when I was a single Mum at uni!

Apparently they start a new program every time on ends. They only catch is that you need to sign up again or miss out on a place. It’s great for mum’s!!

  8. Good on you for shaving for the cause – I’m doing my part by getting an article about a local person in the newspaper I write for, a cop out but it’s something right?! xx
